Thank you for stopping by to check out the 2009 Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race's 32nd year on April 25, 2009 with alternate date of May 2.

The Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race is hosted by AMVETS Post 88 in Bronson, Florida. We welcome anyone who would like to try their luck at paddling down the Waccasassa River over obstacles big and small for a chance to win some really nice prizes, and for prizes drawn throughout the race on U.S. 19, where the party starts with great food and music.

We hope to see some new faces this year and to visit with racers from past years. We are going to make this an even better event than our 31st, although that will be tough to beat!

Be sure to stop by now and then to check out the progress of this website as we move into 2009 for the Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak event. We are working on your suggestions from the 2008 race and have already made some changes and improvements.

AMVETS IN THE COMMUNITY

In 2008, AMVETS Post 88 was excited to give $6,750 to Betty Walker to offset their budget. This is our biggest charity event to help our community. We also contribute supplies throughout the year to the Bronson Elementary School and have volunteered to help with the Bronson High Girls Soccer events. We are presently opening up our new Post on S.R. 24 next to the Bronson Speedway and hope to be in by October 31, 2008. LARC

The LARC (Levy Association for Retarded Citizens) was organized in 1976 by the concerned citizens of Levy County. ARC has aimed to furnish the men and women we serve with programs and services that will provide real life training and skills. These skills are stepping stones that will enable the consumer to live their lives with dignity and self respect--qualities of lifewhich everyone deserves.

LARC contributes the program's success to a dedicated Board of Directors, Executive Director, staff and the many volunteers.

The mission is LARC is to empower the mentally challenged individuals we serve with the ability to choose and realize their own goals, promote their strengths through education and advocacy with the support of families, friends, and the community. The program reaches out to teach these individuals the daily living skills that will allow them to function to their best possible level, protect them from basic life dangers, and promote self worth.

The Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race helps LARC financially to keep their program running to promote awareness in our community. The AMVETS supports this program in a positive manner by hosting and encouraging support from businesses in the community.

mvets Post 88, Bronson, Florida is looking for sponsors for the upcoming 32nd Annual Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race, to take place April 25, 2009 along the Waccasassa River. This annual race supports our disabled citizens of Levy County, namely the Levy Association for Retarded Citizens. We strongly believe in this project and hope that you will too.

Wild Hog 2009

Welcome! This year's 32nd Annual Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race will start on April 25, 2009. We have already heard from a few of you who want to try your luck paddling down the Waccasassa River. We had a great turnout this past April with some really nice prizes.

We expect to make some minor changes this year. Read the Brochure and Rules for all the changes that have occurred.

We hope everyone enjoyed the "I Survived..." photo shoot at the last race. We didn't do too bad last year, but we expect to raise even more money for LARC this year by getting more boaters involved in the photo shoot and we are looking to increase our sponsorship. Welcome to the 32nd Annual Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race

You are invited to compete in the 32nd Annual Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race on Saturday, April 25, 2009. This race has been hosted by AMVETS Post 88 for four years now and the monies raised go to help the Levy Association for Retarded Citizens (LARC) in Otter Creek.

Registration

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m. on State Rd 24 at the Waccasassa Bridge and ends promptly at 10:00 a.m. NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE TAKEN AFTER 10:00 a.m. Racers will start at 8:00 a.m. Our optional weather date is Saturday, May 2. Watch for posted signs!

*The race begins at State Road 24 at the Waccasassa Bridge, 2 miles east of Otter Creek. You will finish at U.S. Highway 19 at the Waccasassa Bridge, 6 miles south of Otter Creek.

Rules of the Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race

Please read as there are several changes to the rules for 2009

All racers must have PFDs (personal flotation devices) on board and must be on board at the finish line to be official. No PFDs, No Race.
All boats and racers MUST cross over the last log in sight of finish line between ribbons to qualify. A five-minute penalty for each racer will be assessed for not crossing over the log. All racers, MUST BE in their boat when the boat crosses the finish line or you do NOT qualify.
All entrants MUST sign an insurance waiver. Under 18 must have guardian/parent sign. A Notary will be available on race day.
All boats must remain in the water at all times; no shortcuts over land allowed.
Experienced boaters cannot compete in the Recreation class.
All kayaks MUST compete in the kayak class ONLY!
If you place in Recreation this year, you must move up the following year.

NO ALCOHOL IN BOATS OR AT START OR FINISH LINE WHATSOEVER!

INFORMATION FOR ALL RACERS

PHOTOS

You and/or your team member will have an opportunity to have your photo taken by our photographer behind the “I Survived the Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race” Billboard for a nominal fee of $4.00 for a 4x6 photo. Photo will be mailed so be sure to give correct address and phone number AND boat number to photographer on duty.

INSURANCE

Every racer MUST sign an insurance waiver. If you are under 18 your parent or guardian must sign. Pre-registered racers will have a waiver form ready to sign at the registration table when they arrive. Pre-registering for the race helps to expedite your entry into the race.

WHAT DOES REGISTRATION COVER?

The registration fee covers your entry into the race, a free meal (wristband needed), a T-shirt and bottled water. If you are one of the lucky ones, you may win a paddle!

Please remember this is a Charity race and AMVETS Post 88 is a non-profit organization trying to raise monies to keep Levy ARC programs running for these valuable members of our community.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

After you unload your canoe/kayak, please check in or register at the Registration table, then drive your vehicle down to the finish line (see map for directions). A special parking area has been designated for boaters. You will be bussed back to the start of the race. *Do NOT leave your vehicle at the start line. We will not be responsible for bringing you back to the start line to get your vehicle.

Prizes

Paddles will be awarded to 1st, 2nd & 3rd place winners in each category. If the top three finishers can be determined without all racers finishing the race, the paddles will be distributed early to the winners.

THE RACE BEGINS APRIL 26!!

You are invited to compete in The Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race Saturday, April 26, 2008! Our optional weather date this year is Saturday, May 3. Registration begins 8:00 a.m. and ends at 10:00 a.m.. The Race begins at or before 8:30 a.m. or when enough racers are present to put into the river. Proceeds benefit the Levy Association for Retarded Citizens (LARC) and is sponsored by the AMVETS Post 88 of Bronson, Florida.

THE CLASSES

This year, as you can see, we have added a few more classes, i.e. Parent-Youth and Senior (55+). We also have added 3rd place to each category to give more folks a chance to win. We will have a better system for calculating racing times this year and there will be a board for each division with times.

Experienced
Kayak (1 man) This is the only class for kayaks!
Mixed Class
Novice [1st time racers only]
Parent-Youth (under 18)
Senior (55+)
2-man Kayak
Women’s Class

If someone in your canoe is experienced, you MUST race in the experienced class and NOT the novice class.

Each racer will receive a bottle of water, a race T-shirt and a food wrist-band. If you lose the wristband you will have to pay for your lunch. No replacements will be given.

Prizes
This year's prizes are:
1st place: a week's stay at Westgate Villas in Kissimmee, FL (one mile from Disney)
2nd place: A GPS navigation system
3rd through 6th place: $100 Wal-Mart gift certificates

Also, throughout the day there will be lots of raffles drawn for various prizes. Raffle tickets will be sold on site for all prizes. The main prizes will not be drawn until all racers have completed the course. Remember you do not have to be present to win!

Ticket sales for the main prizes will start the end of January. Our members will be selling all over the Levy county area or you can call the AMVETS Post 88 at 486-1642 for information on where you can purchase your tickets.

Photographs

New: This year, we will be taking photographs at the start of the race (by our Wild Hog sign) and at the finish line (when you come over the log). We will not be processing the photos on-site, but you will be able to see how your photos will look at our "sampler" table where you can sign up to purchase your photo(s) at the end of the race.Your photos will be posted online, with your permission (see registration form add-on), and you can choose which photos you would like us to process through a phone call, email, or by filling out a form at the finish line.

Your photos will be processed and placed in a nice Wild Hog "photo folder" and mailed out to you in approximately 10-15 days after the race. It's a fun way to remember the race.

New: Additional Photo-Op of: "I Survived the Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race" billboard cut-out. See photo below.

You will have an opportunity to have your photo taken at our "carney" wild hog cut-out board where you face and/or your team mate's face will be replaced with the wild hog's face through the cut-out of "I Survived the Wild Hog Canoe & Kayak Race." You will be asked to sign a release form (see registration form) allowing us to put the photos online).
